Privacy Policy

Alter is a character management and proxy application designed for roleplayers using Root. This Privacy Policy explains what information Alter processes, why that information is used, and how Alter handles character and account-related data.

Effective Date: August 15, 2026
Last Updated: August 15, 2026

1. Information Alter Processes

Alter processes information that is necessary to provide its character management and proxy features.

  • Root account or user identifiers used for account linking and character ownership.
  • Character names.
  • Character avatar URLs or stored avatar references.
  • Character prefixes, suffixes, and aliases.
  • Character groups and organizational information.
  • Autoproxy preferences and related Alter settings.
  • Temporary account-linking codes used to connect the Character Manager with a Root account.
  • Messages in Root channels where Alter has access, when necessary to determine whether a message contains a proxy, command, or active autoproxy message.

2. How Alter Uses Information

Alter uses information only as needed to provide and maintain its features.

  • Creating and maintaining character libraries.
  • Linking a Root account to a Character Manager.
  • Identifying character prefixes, suffixes, and aliases.
  • Processing manual proxy and autoproxy messages.
  • Organizing characters into groups.
  • Maintaining user-selected Alter preferences.
Alter does not sell personal information or use character or account information for advertising.

3. Message Processing

Alter may process messages posted in Root channels where the application has access. This processing is used to determine whether a message should be handled as a character proxy, command, or autoproxy message.

When a character proxy is successfully triggered, Alter may create a new channel message representing the selected character and remove the user's original proxy message when the application has permission to do so.

Alter is not designed to maintain a separate archive of ordinary Root conversations.

4. Character Data

Character information may be stored so that character libraries remain available between sessions.

Users can create, edit, and delete characters through the Alter Character Manager. Character data may include names, avatars, proxy settings, aliases, groups, and related configuration.

5. Account Linking

Alter uses account linking so that the Character Manager can be associated with the correct Root user. A temporary linking code may be generated and entered in a Root text channel.

After successful linking, Alter stores the identifiers needed to associate that Root account with the corresponding Character Manager data.

Temporary link codes expire and are intended for one-time account linking.

6. Character Avatars

Alter may allow users to provide image URLs or other supported image references for character avatars.

If an avatar is hosted by an external website or service, that service may receive normal network information when the image is requested. External image hosts operate under their own privacy policies and terms.

7. Third-Party Services

Alter operates on the Root platform and relies on Root's services and APIs to provide its functionality. Use of Root is also subject to Root's own terms, policies, and privacy practices.

Alter may also display externally hosted character images when users provide image URLs.

8. Data Sharing

Alter does not sell or rent user information.

Information may be processed through Root as required for Alter to function. Information may also be disclosed when required by applicable law or when reasonably necessary to protect Alter, its developer, its users, or the integrity of its services.

9. Data Security

Reasonable efforts are made to limit the information Alter processes and stores to what is necessary for application functionality.

However, no electronic storage or transmission system can guarantee absolute security.

10. Children's Privacy

Alter is not designed to independently collect personal information from children. Use of Alter is subject to Root's platform requirements, terms, and applicable age restrictions.

11. Changes to This Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated when Alter's features or data practices change.

When material changes are made, the Last Updated date at the top of this page will be revised.

12. Contact

Questions, privacy concerns, or requests related to Alter can be directed to the Alter developer through Alter's official Root support or community channels.
